Or the STG, if you want to be all weird about it. (Anyone else make more than that? I wanted to reach into the 10 million range at one point, but hit a bar where I'd not make more money than I had to spend on shield replacements, so I kind of stalled.Oh no! You expected another boring "WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE X" thread! But instead you got hit in the face with a million bullets at once. I just checked, my main Raptor file has $7,355,790. Started on Easy, then the difficulty level was increased each time you win until you're on the top setting, and from there it just loops on that. I wouldn't be surprised if in my main file I looped it eight or ten times. I just played Raptor over, and over, and over instead. I still find Raptor an incredibly fun game and play some of it every so often, but Tyrian. As for gameplay, Raptor's a bit more approachable I think because it isn't quite as complex in terms of ship customization, but it's still got a good bit of it with all the weapons and armor, and the key fact that you also have to heal your ship and buy/replace shields with that money as well. Both have good music, but Raptor's is better.

First, Raptor has better graphics and art design Tyrian doesn't even come close really. Sure, Tyrian is probably a longer, harder game, but Raptor is just so ridiculously fun that I never cared. Epic's stuff was great, but Apogee's was even better. I always was on the Apogee side of the Apogee-Epic wars. Tyrian's good, but I always found it nowhere near as good as Raptor. It is possible to praise Tyrian too much, because Raptor is the better game.

all that I can find of it are these links:

Unfortunately, while there used to be a great site listing virtually every PC shmup called Shoot the Core (it focused on modern Japanese doujin shmups and such, but had many of the older PC games as well), it vanished earlier this year. They're all simple, stylish, and interesting games with different game mechanics and a pretty high level of quality. There are just so many PC games out there, I could never hope to mention everything.Īs for other games, Kenta Cho's games are definitely recommended. Apogee's shmups Stargunner and Major Stryker, both also pretty good games, are also both freeware ( ). other than Raptor, the most popular would be Tyrian, which is freeware as Tyrian 2000. There were lots of shmups back in the DOS shareware days, if you look you'll find bunches of them. Still, the site is still there, so it's likely they're still available.

I haven't tried ordering the full versions and the site hasn't updated in several years, sadly. You can get them all at, or the demos (Win95 versions) at least for sure.

I like Raptor more, but they're decent enough to try. I really like the money and shop aspects, they add something to the game that almost no other shmups have.Īfter Raptor the same people went on to make Demonstar and the two Demonstar: Special Missions titles, which are simpler games that ditch the money and shop aspects in favor of standard pick-up-the-powerups stuff. it's a bit easy unless you make it hard on yourself by not saving between levels or something, but still, it's a great game. I still love this game, it's just so playable and fun.
